Project 400 Royal Huisman

Impressive 81m Sailing Yacht Project 400 by Royal Huisman

Royal Huisman announced the  81-meter three-masted sailing yacht Project 400 for an Asian client in October 2016. They started the construction in June 2017.

Project 400 was drawn by Dykstra Naval Architects (naval architecture/exterior design) and Mark Whitely (exterior and interior design). The 81m aluminum hull has space for 12 guests including owners and a crew of 13. Although it is an impressive project, the yacht will have a Panamax height (and a carbon rig by Rondal).

Furthermore, the yacht is the largest to date by Royal Huisman by volume (Athena is the longest with 90m including bowsprit – hull has a length of 79.25 m). This new one is also the largest full-aluminum sailing yacht in the world to date. Delivery is scheduled for 2020.

“Build me my dream”

Owner of Project 400

Thys Nikkels of Dykstra Naval Architects:

“At Dykstra Naval Architects we are extremely excited and proud to be part of the creative team for the new 81m, three-masted performance schooner. Using our experience and inventive minds to create an innovative contemporary schooner yacht for fast passage making is one to tick off our Bucket List.”

Mark Whiteley of Mark Whiteley Design:

“Building a project with Royal Huisman is a very special experience for a designer, jointly designing an 81m new build is an opportunity of a career lifetime so I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Dykstra Naval Architects and the shipyard on this fast contemporary schooner”

The modern interior is based on Alpi Walnut and is for comfortable family cruising but also for business meetings. The superstructure has a private part for owner and guests.

Thys Nikkels of Dykstra Naval Architects explains:

“the plumb bow, very long waterline, sleek hull and large sail area will give the yacht the required high speed and good performance.”

For fun during times at anchor bays, Project 400 will provide a lot of space for guest tender with dive equipment, kayaks, SUP boards at the aft area.

During the annual Dutch Superyacht Presstour in 2018, organized by the Holland Yachting Group/HISWA, I had the chance to visit Royal Huisman, Rondal and Project 400. All the pictures and the videos where the yard shows the turning of the hull are very impressive but in real life, it is much more impressive. To stand on the hull felt like an oversized sailing dinghy, the second picture below is not another superyacht project – it is the flybridge but with 38m it has the measurement of a superyacht.

Y712 Black Pearl Yacht Oceanco

Black Pearl (Project SOLAR) by Oceanco

Oceanco's 106.70 m BLACK PEARL (Project SOLAR) aka Y712 finally delivered.

BLACK PEARL (Project Solar) is one the largest sailing yacht in the world and features a DynaRig like Maltese Falcon. This impressive sailing yacht was designed by Ken Freivokh and Nuvolari Lenard. Both are responsible for exterior and interior styling. Another stakeholder in the interior design is Villate Design. The naval architecture was done by Dykstra Naval Architects and the in-house team of Oceanco.

Dykstra designed also the DynaRig with the three 70m masts carbon fiber masts. It takes seven minutes to set 2,900 sqm of sail area that powers her up to 30 knots. A hybrid propulsion system, engineered by BMT Nigel Gee delivers power for electrics and electronics.

Aquarius Yacht Royal Huisman

AQUARIUS (56m) by Royal Huisman

Renowned Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman starts construction of 56m classic ketch "Aquarius" designed by Dykstra Naval Architects with interior design by Mark Whitely Design.

Aquarius will be equipped with carbon spars and booms which have a Panamax height limitation. The hull design details feature oval portholes, a circular skylight around the mizzen mast to flood the owner’s suite with daylight.

Aquarius will carry a 6.2m jet drive tender behind the foremast. She gets a large 3m side boarding platform and the twin helm station will be a part of the main cockpit.

Thys Nikkels of Dykstra Naval Architects says:

“The owner’s brief for Aquarius has been for a stunning looking yacht for family enjoyment. We created a slender hull with long overhangs for an elegant and classic-looking yacht with favorable sea-keeping characteristics that are ideal for worldwide cruising. The generous sail area combined with her ketch rig and modern underwater body with fin keel and spade rudder will assure light air agility to her otherwise all round performance. We might see her in a Bucket regatta, but with below deck stowage planned for numerous toys such as a Laser, kayaks, windsurfers, and bicycles she will be as much at home in a secluded bay as on the race course or the high seas.”

Interior designer Mark Whiteley comments:

“The interior will compliment her elegant profile and traditional lines with beautiful raised and fielded white painted paneling trimmed with an elegant but simple profile of fine varnished timber. The brief called for a relaxed home afloat for the owner’s family and friends, and aside from a split-level master cabin featuring a private deckhouse and cockpit, the accommodation includes a large deck salon, three en-suite guest cabins, a media room and even a dedicated fully equipped gym. One cabin will serve as a bunk-room for the owner’s extended family with twin beds that can convert to a Queen double with a set of Pullman berths above. The gymnasium too will have an optional Pullman fitted.“

Delivery for Aquarius is scheduled for autumn 2017. Her maiden voyage will be in the Caribbean at the islands of the West Indies.

KMY Polar Expedition Yacht Dykstra

24m Polar Explorer by KM Yachtbuilders

The new 24m expedition sailing yacht project POLAR is a design by the well-known studio Dykstra Naval Architects.

Usually, sailing yachts around 24m can be found in Spain, Monaco, Antibes, St. Tropez and all the other luxury yacht hotspots. This one was developed for extreme regions with a lot of ice around the yacht – not in the cocktail glass. The expedition sailing yacht with the project name POLAR is the largest yacht by volume to date by KM Yachtbuilders. The longest is still the 26m TULIP. The client is an experienced sailor with 10 years sailing experience in cold regions.

The hull has some areas with a thickness of 40mm plus a 25mm ice reinforcement amidships to the bow. Keel and rudder can be completely retracted to protect them from the ice when the yacht is frozen.

Two rotatable carbon masts without stays (wing rig) will power the 85.000 kg yacht through the seas.

Delivery is scheduled for the beginning of 2019. In the mean time, the owner plans a second journey through the Northwest Passage with start in Alaska.

By the way, that KM Yachtbuilders builds strong yachts captured the owner of the Bestevaer 56 ST TRANQUILO who was jailed by ice.

Yacht Perseverance Claasen Shipyards

Perseverance: 60 ft. custom built yacht by Claasen Shipyards

Claasen Shipyard from the Netherlands built the 60 feet custom pilot cutter PERSEVERANCE with a BMW Bronze Metallic colored hull.

Perseverance’s aluminum hull was built by Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw in Makkum before being transported to Claasen’s facilities in Zaandam for outfitting. The no-nonsense design of the exterior design characterizes the Dykstra approach. As the owner has a background in shipping and a great passion for technology, the technical equipment onboard is of an exceptional standard.

The interior is modern, spacious and luxurious, and the thoughtful layout makes Perseverance feel much larger than she is. The deckhouse has a generous sofa with great outside views, as well as a practical navigation table with a comfortable seat that is very stable when under sail. The below- deck galley is equipped with every appliance imaginable, while the cozy saloon features a U- shaped settee and two comfortable armchairs. The double cabins in the stern and bow both include ensuite facilities with toilet and separate shower.

The yacht has classic lines and masculine looks. A metallic bronze color by BMW was chosen for the hull, while the carbon mast is black. To further accentuate the powerful appearance of the exterior, a teak deck with very wide planks was chosen. The cap rails are finished with solid teak.

“The owner of the 60 ft Perseverance requested a comfortable performance yacht design featuring traditional exterior lines,” explains Edwin Luijf from Dykstra Naval Architects. “This was quite a challenging project as the owner knew exactly what he had in mind for his dream yacht. For instance, he insisted that he be able to easily carry out maintenance on all systems on board by himself. Perseverance has extensive technical equipment for a yacht of this size, making her particularly easy to operate. Furthermore, the owner wished to be able to sail with a limited crew, so the yacht was designed to allow all sails to be operated from the cockpit. In other words, it is never necessary to leave the safety of the deep cockpit during normal use.”

The design brief also specified a maximum draught of 2.6 meters and, in order to achieve the right stability while avoiding the need for heavy ballast, the yacht has been equipped with carbon masts. Last but not least, the practically flat deck allows for an exceptional amount of space. Perseverance will be treated for the eyes, both in port and out on the open waters.
