British studio Lateral Naval Architects and Berlin-based designer Theodorus Fotiadis created the 140m trimaran SPEAR.
A Harmonious Blend of Creativity & Engineering: Unveiling Spear, the 140m trimaran yacht prototype. A fresh partnership between T. Fotiadis Design & Lateral Naval Architects.
Boasting a striking, aerodynamic design, Spear merges functionality, comfort, and vast open areas to deliver an unparalleled sailing journey.
Stepping on board, you’re welcomed by the smooth contours and refined shape that characterize Spear’s style. Each detail of this luxury yacht is meticulously crafted for optimal performance in high-speed sailing, catering to the daring owner.
Given its uniqueness—140m long, 4650 GT, and 23m wide overall —finding a comparable benchmark was challenging. After careful evaluation, a 110m monohull of 4400 GT emerged as the closest match.
At a generous cruising speed of 18 knots, the trimaran’s propulsion system requires 20% less power than the benchmark 110m monohull, equating to the power of an 80m monohull with twice the usable GT. With its larger size, Spear features a medium-speed engine at its heart, a design often seen in large commercial ships, offering an additional 15% fuel efficiency compared to a typical yacht’s high-speed engine.
Spear’s engine is designed for efficiency at lower speeds, capable of reaching a top speed of 21 knots. By incorporating a PTO/PTI-capable gearbox, we can utilize this efficiency at lower speeds to power the yacht’s domestic systems. Together with an electrical DC Grid for load management, we achieve an efficient, adaptable system design.
With its lower fuel consumption and generous tank capacities, this concept is ideally suited for covering distances up to 7500 nautical miles, making Spear a proper vessel for worldwide exploration.
By their nature, the small sponsons create a naturally cozy platform that requires minimal assistance from active stabilization. Even though the sponsors don’t offer extra space inside, they provide significant fuel storage. This makes it easier to add new fuels, especially methanol, which, when paired with the medium-speed engine already in place, will be the first practical solution for future fuels to hit the market.
Although Spear’s technical accomplishments are praiseworthy, the stabilized monohull design brings extra benefits by providing a roomy luxury platform. It offers a 40% increase in the coveted luxury space on the outside while maintaining the luxury interior space of a 110m monohull.
Crafted to enhance outdoor enjoyment, the yacht features wide sun decks, outdoor dining spaces, and opulent lounges, offering guests the chance to enjoy the sun or relax in the shade. Whether it’s a sophisticated cocktail gathering or simply taking in the view, Spear’s open decks are ideal for any event.
To sum up, by adopting a fundamental design strategy aimed at efficiency at sea, this concept reaches a top speed of 21 knots, can travel over 7,500 nautical miles without stopping, and significantly cuts down on fuel consumption by one-third. This success is supported by a reliable, adaptable system design that can easily switch to different fuels in the future. All this is done while providing the most refined globetrotters with a luxurious and comfortable experience.
