Vripack unveils Project Supernova, a fresh 60m expedition vessel built on a reliable foundation, featuring an additional 6m stretch from the initial 54m structure, a redesigned front, an improved outer appearance, and an innovative interior layout.
This design approach excels in two areas: the established foundation eliminates the potential for complications and time spent on engineering for the owner. In contrast, the comprehensive design ensures a completely customized interior.
The energetic and daring owner prioritized adaptability for exploratory journeys. His top desires were to equip the yacht for diving in warmer regions or heli-skiing in colder areas. “He’s an adventurous boat loving owner who also happens to be a highly experienced helicopter pilot, very experienced sailor and an avid diver,” says Vripack’s co-creative director Marnix Hoekstra. “He’s always on the move and wanted a yacht that can keep up.”
The primary requests included a large beach club on the lower deck aft, featuring fold-down platforms on either side to expand the area and hammocks for relaxation when docked. Additionally, there’s a fully equipped dive center. A stepped entrance from the beach club to the aft main deck creates an interconnected loop.
On the aft bridge deck, there’s a spacious helipad with a significant A-frame designed for helicopter operations. It has a crane for handling and launching large submersibles and tenders. There’s also room for two 12m containers to store expedition equipment, ranging from bicycles and beach buggies to vehicles for excursions on land.
The owner’s interior vision was a modern interpretation of traditional American design. This is achieved through the use of dark and moody wood paneling, along with a color scheme of grey, blue, and brown, highlighted with bronze accents, soft leathers, textured walls, and oak furnishings.
The design also incorporates a mix of light and dark materials, tactile textures, colors, and metal accents. In the main salon, a hammered rock centerpiece is placed next to the bar, serving as a cover for the interior piping and HVAC system. It’s complemented by a beautiful, soft calf skin bar top.
The forward cigar lounge is a standout feature, providing a private space for the owner to unwind with friends, store cigars, and keep the rest of the yacht’s interior smoke-free. The owner opted against a traditional office, valuing the freedom to work from any part of the yacht, though the raised man cave could also be converted into an office if needed.
The “treasure cabinet,” designed to house the owner’s items, features a living wall to bring the outdoors inside. To adhere to the owner’s preference for a “no door design,” Vripack designed an open-plan layout that resembles a loft apartment, complete with drop-down balconies in the main salon. Instead of teak, the exterior decks are made of a synthetic wood alternative for a more sustainable look.
A standout feature in interior design is the dual glass walkway running along both sides of the yacht’s forward area, serving as a clear pathway for the crew. This design allows for unobstructed ocean views from the main salon and ensures easy access for service while giving the impression of being an extension of the exterior deck. The walkway is designed to blend seamlessly with the interior flooring.
Hoekstra describes how this design element gives off a sense of endlessness, thanks to the reflections from mirrors and glass, making it difficult to distinguish where the inside meets the outside. The owner was particularly fond of these unique touches, noting that they deviated from the conventional design of yachts.
The yacht’s main deck features a spacious VIP area, enhanced by four guest cabins on the lower deck. The guest rooms have rough marbling and gun metal taps in their bathrooms. An additional dining room and wheelhouse are located on the bridge deck, while a private area for the owner is situated above. The main suite, shaped like an oval, offers direct access to both the forward and aft decks, with loungers and an outdoor fire pit. At the pinnacle, there’s a sundeck complete with a jacuzzi, bar, and comfortable loungers, offering panoramic views as far as the eye can see.
